The best treats are real meat and cheese, cut up into small pieces that can be quickly consumed. String cheese, sausage – wrapped refrigeratorated dog food, and hot dogs are all good options. Make sure that there are no ingredients that may harm your dog like garlic, onion, or xylitol. Find out what is most reinforcing for your dog. Rank treats from highest value to least. Only use the most reinforcing treats for the most difficult cues, like coming when called. When working on a behavior like “leave it” or “drop it” always trade your dog for a treat that is more valuable than the one you are asking him to leave or drop.
